2014 / 2015 highlights

  • The University of Sunderland was recognised at the Times Higher Education Awards for its International Strategy; Employer Engagement and Innovation in the Arts
  • For the second year running the University of Sunderland was named one of the best universities in the UK at which to work, in the Times Higher Education’s 2015 THE Best University Workplace survey
  • The University received its highest ever rating in the overall student satisfaction category of the National Student Survey, 86% of students said they were satisfied overall with their experience at Sunderland. And in the 2015 WhatUni Student Choice survey, students placed us 15th overall, out of the 91 universities taking part
  • Our international students rated us 6th in the world for student support in their response to the International Student Barometer Survey of 2014
  • Work began on two substantial capital projects in 2014/15 - Phase II of the Sciences Complex development and the new Enterprise and Innovation Hub
  • In the Destination of Leavers from Higher Education Survey, which tracks graduate employment, 92.5% of Sunderland students are in work or continuing to higher level study, and over 60% of graduates are in professional level jobs six months after graduating
  • Sunderland’s impact on the economy was highlighted last year in an economic impact study, which showed it is delivering a 20:1 return on investment for every £1 public investment in the University. The University generated £560m Gross Value Added and supported 7,500 jobs in the UK
  • The University was rated as having 10 areas of ‘world-leading’ research following the results of the 2014/15 Research Excellence Framework. All the research submitted to the REF was rated as ‘internationally excellent’
  • The University, supported by Hitachi Rail Europe, announced it will create the first University Technical College in North-East England, focusing on advanced manufacturing and engineering
  • The University continues to be recognised as one of the top 5 in the UK for Transnational Education, the delivery of Sunderland’s programmes with partner universities and colleges around the world

Finances

  • The University has a turnover of £135m, of which £40m is from its international operation
  • The £40m that the University contributed to the UK’s balance of trade with the rest of the world is estimated to have contributed £206.3m to the economies of the various overseas countries in which the University operates

Economic impact

  • In 2012/13 the University had the following impact on the economy
  • Sunderland economy £194.6m per annum
  • North East economy £428.4m per annum
  • UK economy £561m per annum
  • The University supported around 7,500 jobs, which include: around 3,000 jobs in Sunderland / around 5,000 jobs in the North East of England
  • Based on these impacts, it can be shown that the University of Sunderland: generated a total impact of £8.08 for every £1 of direct impact / supported five jobs in the UK for every person directly employed / generated £18.21 for the UK economy for every £1 income received from funding bodies

  • An additional three areas are also classified as having ‘internationally excellent’ research: Computer science and informatics, Law, Music, dance and performing arts
