To meet Office for Students requirements we now need a record of all events happening on and off campus, who is organising them and details of any external speakers.
The Office for Students (OfS) – the regulator for higher education in England – issued its Prevent Duty framework in September 2018.
Designed with the safety of staff, students and visiting members of the public in mind, the new framework requires all universities to have a policy and systems in place for approving and monitoring events and external speakers. The OfS now requests events and external speaker data on an annual basis. The University may also be asked to attend a Prevent Review Meeting at any time, with limited time to preapre. We will need to demonstrate that our systems and processes are robust and compliant.
Our University of Sunderland Events and External Speaker Policy has been updated to reflect the OfS Framework. It also gives more detail around responsibilities, timescales, as well as advice and guidance.
What does this mean to staff and students?
Anyone responsible for organising an event or booking an external speaker must seek authorisation from their Dean, Director or an agreed deputy before the event or speaker visit takes place. This also includes events on campus but where the organiser is not connected to the University, such as in National Glass Centre or Hope Street Xchange.
To make the process simpler staff and students can now submit their event and speaker information online via My Sunderland.
Here, you will also find all the relevant policies, procedures and documentation, as well as other resources to support your event planning.
Events pages on the University’s website have also been improved to showcase our growing events programme to the public. There are now clear event categories and an improved events landing page, where you can find featured events and links to our commercial events spaces and arts venues.
